Story behind the name
Several years ago, Scott and I decided to forgo the mowing of our (substantial) front yard and let it grow wild and free, available to any critters that wanted to avail themselves of the bounty of seeds and grasses that grow there. I knew it would save precious time not mowing a space we didn't use, and hopefully do wonders for our lawn (it did), but I had absolutely no IDEA how much I would adore it. That very first year, it was affectionately dubbed: The Meadow.
Watching the tall grasses sway in the summer breeze is mesmerizing enough, but all of the wildlife that flock to it truly make it a treasure. Birds wage war over the two choice nesting boxes in the spring. Coyotes trot through it in the summer. Wild turkeys strip the grasses of seeds in the fall. A mama deer and her fawns visit throughout the seasons and feast on pears. And watching the rabbits joyfully chase each other through the greenery on warm evenings is perhaps one of the best ways one could spend their time.
Honestly, the whole family was/is in love with it, and I now eagerly anticipate it growing up every spring. But when I found a note from a "friendly" neighbor shoved into our mailbox one morning ("Your yard looks awful. It isn't pretty"), we quickly realized that not everyone is as thrilled with our natural masterpiece as we are.I imagine our meddling neighbor was hoping to shame us into mowing it all down (we didn't), and I actually feel kinda sad for her. A perfectly manicured lawn IS quite lovely to look at, but so is a natural landscape resplendent with critters. Honestly, those animals benefited from those grasses being long far more than we did from them short, and we decided The Meadow is definitely here to stay. (And the wildlife heartily approves of our decision.)
